Since 25 September 2017, GCAP in cooperation with the UN SDG Action Campaign has initiated the Global Day of Action, which became the week of Action to demand the implementation of the SDGs. GCAP together with 21 civil society partners, organized the first global People’s Assembly in New York on 24-25 September 2019 in parallel with the UN SDG Summit to galvanize the marginalized voices. In September 2020 as part of the Global Week of Action GCAP organizes local and national level virtual People’s Assemblies in at least 25 countries to deliberate policy asks in a bottom-up process during the COVID-19 pandemic – to mobilise for debt relief, universal social protection, vaccine for all and other demands together with marginalized people.

Virtual meeting of key stakeholders and partners in Nigeria to discuss the SDGs since its implementation

Splash FM 105.5, Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP), Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) and Nigeria Network of NGOs (NNNGO), are convening a “people’s assembly on the SDGs” on the 24th of September 2020 to serve as an opportunity for citizens and citizen organisations to discuss progress on the SDGs and provide perspective on policies that can accelerate recovery from the pandemic and set Nigeria on the path to attaining the SDGs. At the end of the “assembly”, reports and recorded sessions will be created as substantive contribution to the debate on the nation’s recovery and attainment of the SDGs.The “people’s assembly on the SDGs” aims to provide a consolidated view of citizens and citizen organisations on the state of governments’ commitment to attaining the SDGs by 2030. The review will be focused and action oriented x-raying issues around Nigeria’s developmental history-given the 60th anniversary of our independence, insurgency, and emergencies in the North-East, genderaware development, the role of the media and celebrities in connection to recovering from the pandemic and refocusing energies on the path to meeting and exceeding agenda 2030.

CONGOMA in partnership with the National Planning Commission will organise an engagement meeting as part of mobilizing citizens to take action for the SDGs. The National Planning Commission has been entrusted with coordinating SDG activities, including coordinating production of the Voluntary National Report. CONGOMA as an NGO coordinating body in Malawi hosts the National Civil Society Taskforce on SDGs. The Taskforce participated in drafting the VNR and produced a People’s report on SDGs. The two report have not been adequately disseminated to the general public. As such, the engagement meeting between civil society and Government on the contents of the two reports and what needs to be done to address the challenges contained therein will provide a great opportunity for collaborative efforts.
